First Time Calling for Garage Door Repair?
Here’s Exactly What to Expect.

Your garage door is broken. Maybe it won’t open or close. Maybe you heard a terrifyingly loud BANG, your garage door opener suddenly stopped working, the door is making a strange noise, or someone accidentally backed the SUV into it.

You know there is a problem. You just don’t know what it is—or what to do next.

You simply want to have your garage door fixed.

If this is your first time dealing with a broken garage door, it can feel overwhelming. Here is the important part: You don’t need to know anything about garage doors to call us.

At Overhead Door Company of Huntsville/North Alabama™, we help homeowners, landlords, property managers and real estate professionals every day. You don’t need to learn garage door terminology, diagnose the problem yourself, or attempt a potentially dangerous DIY repair. Just tell us what you see, hear, or experienced. We’ll help you from there.

Let’s Begin Here

Common Questions When You Need Your Garage Door Fixed

What Do I Tell You When I Call?

You don’t need a diagnosis. Just tell us what the garage door is doing—or not doing. Customers call us every day with descriptions as simple as:

  • “My garage door won’t open.”
  • “My garage door won’t close.”
  • “The opener makes noise, but nothing moves.”
  • “The door starts moving and then stops.”
  • “I heard a loud bang from the garage.”
  • “The door looks crooked or uneven.”
  • “We had a storm yesterday, and now nothing is working.”
  • “It worked fine yesterday, but today it doesn’t.”
  • “Someone backed into the garage door.”
  • “One of the panels is damaged.”
  • “I really don’t know what happened. I just need my garage door fixed.”

That is enough to get us started. Sometimes you know exactly what happened, and sometimes you have absolutely no idea. Either way, you don’t have to figure out what needs to be repaired before you call.

What Questions Will You Ask Me?

Once you tell us what is happening, we may ask whether the garage door is stuck open or closed, whether it moves at all, whether the opener makes a sound, whether you heard a loud bang, or whether the problem began after a storm or power interruption.

We may also ask about the brand and approximate age of your garage door opener. If you don’t know how old it is, we may simply ask, “How long have you lived in your home?” If the opener was already there when you moved in, that gives us useful information.

If you don’t know the size of your garage door, we may ask you to count the panels across the width of the door. You don’t need to climb a ladder, hunt for model numbers, or grab a tape measure. If you don’t know an answer, just tell us.

Why Do You Ask So Many Questions
If You Don’t Charge a Trip Fee?

Because we want to give you a fair and honest reply before sending a technician to your home.

The symptoms you describe help us understand what the problem may involve. For many common garage door repairs, that information also allows us to discuss pricing over the phone and give you a heads-up about what our technician may be looking for when they arrive.

It also helps us prepare for your service call. The more we know about what is happening, the better we can prepare our technician and make sure the appropriate parts or equipment are on the service truck before heading to your home. We aren’t asking you to diagnose the problem—we simply want you to tell us what you see, hear, or have experienced.

If you are an existing customer, we may also review your service history while we have you on the phone. This allows us to see previous work performed at your home and determine whether a part or repair may still be covered under warranty.

We don’t ask every customer the same questions, either. A homeowner calling for the first time may need more guidance. A landlord may want an idea of the repair cost before authorizing work. A property manager may need us to coordinate with a tenant. A realtor may simply need a garage door problem addressed during a real estate transaction.

We ask what makes sense for your situation.

Someone Backed Into My Garage Door. What Should I Do?

It happens more often than you might think. Someone backs into the garage door, the door comes down on a bumper, or a panel gets bent or damaged.

For visible damage, we may give you our email address and ask you to send us a few pictures. Photos can help our local team see where the damage occurred, how many sections appear to be affected, and what additional information we may need.

Depending on the damage, the next step may be a repair, replacement panel or section, or possibly a new garage door. You don’t have to determine that yourself before calling.

Does a Broken Garage Door Mean I Need a New One?

No. A broken garage door does not automatically mean you need a brand-new garage door, and an opener problem does not automatically mean you need a new garage door opener.

Many common problems can be repaired by replacing or adjusting individual components such as springs, cables, rollers, sensors or other operating parts. Other situations may require more extensive repairs or replacement. The appropriate solution depends on what failed, the age and condition of the equipment, and what is required to safely restore operation.

How Much Is My Garage Door Repair Going to Cost?

We understand why customers want to know this before scheduling service.

For many common garage door repairs, we can provide pricing information over the phone based on what you tell us. We do not charge a service fee or trip charge, and our technicians are non-commissioned company employees.

If our technician arrives and discovers that the problem is different from what was originally described, we explain what was found and discuss the repair and pricing before additional work proceeds.

Our goal is simple: give you enough information to make an informed decision without unnecessary surprises.

Can I Troubleshoot My Garage Door Before Calling?

Yes, but keep it simple. You can observe whether the wall button works, whether you hear the opener running, whether the garage door moves at all, whether you heard a loud bang, or whether you can see something obviously broken, loose or crooked.

There is an important difference between looking and repairing. Garage door springs, cables and other components operate under extreme tension. Never loosen, adjust, remove or attempt to repair these components yourself.

You do not need to diagnose the garage door before calling for professional service.

Should I Keep Using a Garage Door That Isn’t Working Correctly?

Not if the door appears unsafe.

Stop operating a garage door that is hanging crooked, has come off its tracks, has a visibly broken spring or cable, is making severe or unusual noises, or is moving in an unstable manner. Continuing to operate a malfunctioning garage door can cause additional damage and may create a safety hazard.

If you aren’t sure whether it is safe to operate, tell us what is happening when you call.

What Should I Ask Before Choosing a Garage Door Company?

If you have never needed garage door repair before, you may not know how to evaluate the company you found.

Ask whether the company is local, licensed and insured. Find out whether its technicians are employees or subcontractors, whether it charges a service call or trip charge, whether its technicians are commissioned, and whether you will know the repair cost before work is performed.

A legitimate garage door company should be comfortable answering those questions.

How Can I Make Sure the Garage Door Company Is Real?

Look beyond the advertisement and phone number.

Check whether the company has an established local presence and a legitimate business location. Look at its history and online presence. Google reviews are a good place to start, but don’t stop there. Check the Better Business Bureau, Nextdoor, Yelp, Angi, local community groups, and other established sources.

If you’re new to the area, ask neighbors, friends or your realtor who they have actually used. And don’t judge a company solely by its star rating. Read what customers say, look at the history of those reviews, and notice how the company responds when a customer has a problem.

A professional-looking website, advertisement, or prominent position in a search result does not necessarily tell you who you are calling or who will arrive at your home.

If you cannot independently verify who the company is, don’t invite them into your home.

What If I’m a Landlord, Property Manager or Realtor?

Not everyone calling us is standing in their own garage. We regularly coordinate garage door repairs for rental properties, property management companies and real estate transactions.

Tell us the situation when you call. We may need the property address, information about the garage door problem, the tenant or occupant’s contact information for access, who is authorized to approve the repair, and any billing or repair instructions that apply.

If one person is describing the problem and another person is responsible for approving the work, knowing that from the beginning makes the process easier for everyone.

Please Call Ahead: If the property involves a landlord, tenant, realtor, or property manager, please let us know when scheduling so we can coordinate access, authorization, and any special instructions before our technician arrives.

What Happens When the Garage Door Technician Arrives?

The technician’s first job is to determine what is actually causing the problem. Depending on the symptoms, that may include inspecting the garage door, springs, cables, rollers, tracks, hinges, safety sensors, garage door opener, controls and other operating components.

Sometimes what appears to be a garage door opener problem is actually a problem with the garage door itself. Other times, something that seems like a major failure has a relatively straightforward solution.

Once the problem has been identified, we’ll explain what needs to be repaired and the cost before the work proceeds.

Payment: Payment for garage door sales, service, or installation is collected before we leave your property. If your project includes a special-order item, we’ll explain the applicable payment terms with you in advance.

You Don’t Need to Know Garage Doors. That’s Our Job.

If this is your first garage door repair, you don’t need to know the name of the broken part, exactly how old your garage door is, its size, or whether you need a repair, replacement panel, new opener or new garage door.

You also don’t need to diagnose the problem before calling.

Just tell us:

“I need my garage door fixed.”

That’s enough. We’ll ask the questions we need to ask and help you determine where to go from there.

A Final Note About Garage Door Safety

Garage door springs, cables and other components operate under extreme tension. Never attempt to loosen, adjust, remove or repair these components yourself.

If your garage door appears unstable, has a broken spring or cable, has come off its tracks, or otherwise appears unsafe, stop operating it and contact a trained garage door professional.
