When Resetting Your Overhead Door™ Garage Door Opener Helps — and When It Doesn’t
Garage door openers are one of the most relied-upon systems in your home — until something goes wrong.
One of our most asked questions:
“Can I just reset my garage door opener to fix the issue?”
At Overhead Door Company of Huntsville/North Alabama™, we hear this question regularly. While resetting your garage door opener can help in a few specific situations, it’s not a universal fix.
Understanding the difference between resetting and reprogramming can save you time, stress, and potentially avoidable service calls.
Let’s explore what works and doesn’t when resetting and what to know before trying it.

What Does It Mean to ‘Reset’ a Garage Door Opener?
Most Overhead Door™ openers do not have a physical “reset” button like you might find on other electronics. In most cases, resetting means power cycling the unit. This may not apply to older models—refer to your owner’s manual or contact your local Overhead Door Company™ for guidance.
For garage door openers from other brands (not Overhead Door™), start by noting the brand and model number. You can usually find a manual online that outlines the reset process, or you can contact the manufacturer’s customer service for step-by-step instructions.
If you’re still unable to resolve the issue, it’s best to reach out to a professional garage door service company and have a qualified technician assist you.
How to reset your Overhead Door™ garage door opener:
Unplug the opener from its ceiling outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug it back in and test the door.
This action can clear minor logic board glitches and restore communication with connected devices.
Special Note:
This is not the same as pressing the LEARN or PROGRAM buttons on your Overhead Door™ brand opener. Unplugging the unit simply cuts power to refresh the internal logic board — it does not erase or reprogram your remotes, keypad, or wall controls.
Some openers have battery backups to prevent resets after power outages or disconnections.
When Resetting Might Actually Help
Resetting your Overhead Door™ opener can be effective in a few situations:
- The opener is unresponsive.
- If your wall button, keypad, or remote stops responding for no clear reason, resetting may help refresh internal communication.
- After a power outage or surge.
- Sudden power loss can disrupt the logic board. A reset may restore proper operation.
- Your smart control app has lost connection.
- If you’re using OHD Anywhere® and the app isn’t responding, a power reset can re-establish the link — although additional steps may be required depending on your Wi-Fi network.
- Remotes or keypads suddenly stop working.
- If a previously working remote or keypad suddenly won’t trigger the door—even after confirming the battery is good—a power cycle can sometimes “wake up” the opener’s logic board and restore functionality.
Why this works:
Sometimes, the opener’s internal memory temporarily freezes or loses its ability to process input signals, even though the devices are still properly programmed. Resetting the power clears that stuck memory—similar to restarting a frozen computer.
When Resetting Won’t Help
While a reset is a good first step, there are many problems it can’t solve:
- Resetting will not restore function if a spring is broken. Read more about “Why Does a Garage Door Spring Break.”
- If your motor runs but the door doesn’t lift, the issue is likely mechanical.
- If your garage door won’t close and flashes its lights, the photo sensors may be blocked or misaligned — not something a reset will fix.
- Travel or force-setting problems.
- Doors that only open part-way or stop too soon typically need mechanical adjustment — not a reset.
- Unpaired or erased devices.
- A reset will not reprogram a remote or keypad that has been erased or was never programmed.
- Internal opener damage or garage door opener needs replacement due to worn out parts or malfunctioning.
- Unplugging the circuit board, motor, or gear will not restore performance if they are damaged.

Resetting vs. Reprogramming
What’s the Difference?
These two terms are often confused — but they serve different purposes.
Resetting
- Done by unplugging the opener from power, then plugging it back in.
- Clears minor logic board glitches or connection problems.
- Can sometimes restore working communication with pre-programmed remotes or keypads.
- Does not delete or erase codes.
Reprogramming
Involves manually pairing a remote, keypad, or wireless device with the opener.
- You’re adding a new remote or keypad for the first time.
- You’ve erased all remotes for security.
- You’ve changed your Wi-Fi network and need to reconnect your smart system.
Important note on batteries:
Replacing the battery in a remote or keypad does not typically require reprogramming.
Most Overhead Door™ accessories retain memory during battery changes. However, if the battery is completely dead for an extended period—or the device acts unusually afterward—reprogramming may help.

When to Call a Professional
If you’ve tried resetting and the opener is still unresponsive—or if you’re unsure whether it’s a programming, mechanical, or electrical issue—it’s time to call an expert.
