Why We Don’t Sell Garage Door Springs and Other High-Tension Parts

One of the most common questions we receive is why we will not sell torsion springs directly to walk-in customers. The answer comes down entirely to risk management.

Garage door springs store a massive amount of mechanical energy to counterbalance the weight of the door. When functioning correctly, that energy is controlled and stable within the system. When a spring breaks, slips, or is installed improperly, that energy is released instantly and violently.

Documented injuries associated with garage door springs include:

  • Permanent eye injuries, blindness, and vision loss

  • Severe facial trauma and deep lacerations

  • Broken fingers, hands, and fractures

  • Head injuries and falls from ladders during repair attempts

Medical literature has heavily documented severe eye trauma and permanent vision loss associated with spring failures and sudden hardware release events.

When components come from unknown online sources or big-box retailers, there is no reliable way for us to verify their condition, compatibility, or compliance with current UL 325 safety requirements. For that reason, we only install components that we supply and can confidently stand behind.

What We DO Sell Over the Counter

To accommodate our DIY customers safely, we do provide select access products over the counter, including:

  • Garage door remotes

  • Exterior keypads

These items are safe to program and are fully compatible with the systems we install and service. We strictly do not sell springs, lifting hardware, cables, or internal operator components.

Why We Don’t Recommend DIY Garage Door Repairs

We completely understand why homeowners look for do-it-yourself garage door repair information. There are thousands of videos and guides available online, and some repairs can appear deceptively simple.

However, garage doors contain heavy moving sections, stored energy systems, severe pinch points, and safety devices that must all function flawlessly together. When repairs are performed incorrectly, the results can be catastrophic.

High-Risk Components (Professional Service Required)

These parts handle the immense weight, structural integrity, and mechanical energy of your door. We do not sell these over the counter or recommend DIY servicing for these parts under any circumstances:

  • Garage Door Springs: These carry the heavy lifting—literally. They counterbalance the weight of the door so it can open and close easily. Torsion Springs are mounted above the door and twist to lift heavier doors smoothly. Extension Springs run along the sides and stretch to lift the door. Because they store immense mechanical energy, a DIY mishap or a sudden snap can cause severe facial trauma, blindness, or fractures.

  • Garage Door Cables, Drums, and Pulleys: These work directly with the springs to lift the door and keep tension even. They are under extreme tension. If a cable snaps, slips, or a drum wears out, the door can drop violently or hang crookedly. Never try to replace these on your own—they require specialized tools and professional training.

  • Tracks and Hinges: Tracks are the vertical and horizontal rails that guide the door, while hinges connect the door panels so they can bend.   • Rollers: These allow the door to roll along the tracks smoothly. While they seem small, changing a worn roller changes the system balance. If rollers get stuck or are replaced incorrectly, the door can open unevenly, putting immense strain on the opener.

  • Brackets and Fasteners: These may seem minor, but they hold the high-tension system together. Loosening the wrong bracket or bolt during a DIY repair can instantly release the stored energy of the springs.

Low-Risk & Maintenance Components (Safe for Homeowners)

These parts do not hold the structural weight or high tension of the door system. While we still recommend professional alignment for total system integrity, these are areas where homeowners can safely perform basic maintenance:

  • Safety Sensors: These photoelectric eyes detect objects under the door and prevent it from closing if something is in the way. If your door won’t close, the sensors may just be dirty or misaligned. Homeowners can safely wipe the lenses clean or gently adjust them so they face each other.

  • Garage Door Opener: This motorized unit (whether chain, belt, or screw drive) automates the door. While internal operator components are too complex for DIY, changing the batteries in your remote control or exterior keypad is completely safe.

  • Weather Seals: These are the rubber or vinyl strips that keep out wind, rain, and pests at the bottom and sides of the door. Replacing worn, cracked seals is an easy, safe way for a homeowner to boost energy efficiency.
